Abstract

Penelitian ini dilakukan untuk menggambarkan The levels of English Vocabulary Mastery and Listening Comprehension dan mencari seberapa erat hubungan antara English Vocabulary Mastery and Listening Comprehension. Populasi penelitian ini berasal dari lulusan SMA Bulungan yang saat ini sedang berkuliah disalah satu Universitas di Tarakan. Jumlah populasi adalah 30 siswa.Sampel yang diambil menggunakan tehnik acak. Untuk mengetahui level antara Vocabulary Mastery dan Listening Comprehension, peneliti menggunakan tes pilihan ganda pada tes Vocabulary and Listening. Nilai yang didapat, diolah sesuai dengan criteria penilaian yang digunakan oleh Dinas Pendidikan. Terakhir data dianalisa menggunakan statistical package for social science (spss) 16. 00 untuk windows. Menurut dari hasil penelitian, menunjukkan bahwa nilai mean Listening Comprehension adalah 32,00. Dan nilai mean Vocabulary Mastery adalah 37.73. Disamping itu nilai minimum dan maksimum dari kedua variable juga menunjukkan bahwa nilai Vocabulary Mastery masih lebih baik dari pada Listening Comprehension.Nilai minimum Listening Comprehension adalah 16.00 sedangkan maksimum 56.00.dan nilai minimum Vocabulary Masterya dalah 12.00 sedangkan maksimum adalah 76.00. sedangkan dalam criteria standar nilai Dinas pendidikan menunjukkan bahwa nilai dari 21-40 termasuk kedalam klasifikasi buruk. Itu berarti bahwa level dari listening comprehension termasuk dalam klasifikasi yang buruk karena nilai mean dari listening comprehension adalah 32.00. begitu juga dengan Vocabulary mastery, karena nilai mean vocabulary mastery adalah 37.73 yang menunjukkan bahwa termasuk dalam klasifikasi yang buruk. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa Level dari English Vocabulary Mastery and Listening Comprehension masih sangat lemah, dan tidak ada korelasi antara English Vocabulary Mastery and Listening Comprehension.

The study was conducted to describe the levels of English Vocabulary Mastery and Listening Comprehension and to investigate the correlation between vocabulary mastery and listening comprehension. The population of this study was senior high school students graduated in Bulungan regency who are now studying in Tarakan University. The total number of sample was 30 students, taken by stratified random sampling technique. To know the levels of vocabulary mastery and listening comprehensions, the researcher was given a multiple choices test for vocabulary and listening. That is scored by using department of national education scoring criteria. Finally, the data was analyzed using the product moment correlation aided by statistical package for social science (SPSS) 16. 00 for windows The levels of English vocabulary mastery and listening comprehension of Senior High School (SMA) Graduates in Bulungan city can be reported that The research result of the study showed mean score of listening comprehension test is 32.00 while the mean score of vocabulary comprehension test is 37.73. Besides that, minimum and maximum score of both variables also showed vocabulary comprehension is still better than listening comprehension. Minimum score of listening comprehension is 16.00 and maximum score is 56.00, and vocabulary comprehension that get minimum score is 12.00 and maximum score is 76.00. Based on standard of Ministry National Education that the score 21 – 40 is include into the poor classification. The level of listening comprehension include to the poor classifiied because mean score of listening comprehension is 32.00 and Level of vocabulary comprehension also include to the poor classified because mean score of vocabulary comprehension is 37.73. The Statistical correlation was found that r-test (r = 0.156) which was smaller than r-table (0,631), implying that vocabulary mastery did not correlate with listening comprehension of Senior High School (SMA) Graduates in Bulungan city. The research concludes that there was no correlation between vocabulary mastery and listening comprehension, if some of students are good at vocabulary it doesn’t mean good at listening.
