Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menginfestigasi kemampuan kosa kata dan menulis dalam Bahasa Inggris, dan hubungan antara kosa kata dan menulis dalam Bahasa Inggris. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode Quantitative Descriptive Correlation, dimana Populasi dari penelitian ini adalah siswa lulusan SMP se-kota Tarakan. Sampel diambil dengan menggunakan random sampling technique. Sampel penelitian ini terdiri 18 SMP se-kota Tarakan yang setiap sekolah mengirimkan utusannya sebanyak 3 siswa yang keseluruhannya berjumlah 54 siswa dan dipilih lagi berdasarkan undian menjadi 30 siswa yang akan diukur kemampuannya dalam vocabulary dan writing, dan hubungan antara kedua variable tersebut. Siswa diberikan tes Menulis dan test TOEFL Kosa-kata. Kemudian data dianalisis dengan menggunakan software SPSS 11.0 for windows. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa nilai rata-rata kemampuan kosa-kata siswa lulusan SMP di Tarakan adalah 32.93, berarti kemampuan kosa-kata siswa lulusan kota Tarakan berkriteria lemah. Lalu nilai rata-rata kemampuan menulis siswa lulusan SMP di Tarakan 38.89, berarti kemampuan menulis siswa lulusan SMP di Tarakan berkriteria lemah. Lalu ada hubungan yang lemah terhadap 2 variable tersebut untuk siswa lulusan SMP Tarakan, ini didukung dari data korelasi koefisien 0,480 (average) dan nilai yang kritis (a) r-table dengan kemampuan signifikan 0,05 (5%), untuk N=30 – 2 Variabel = 28 adalah 0,361. Hasil dari r-test sangat tinggi dari pada r-table (0,480 > 0,361). Data menyatakan (ho) ditolak. Berarti korelasi koefisien (0,442) ini mencakup jarak koevisien 0,250,5 diantara kedua variable kemampuannya rata-rata. Jadi kemampuan siswa untuk kemampuan kosa-kata, dan menulis se-kota Tarakan jika dikorelasikan hasilnya adalah mencapai rata-rata. Berdasarkan hasil tersebut diatas, maka disimpulkan bahwa (ho) Null Hypothesis ditolak dan (Ha) alternative Hypothesis diterima walaupun hubungan kemampuan siswa diantara kedua variable tersebut lemah tetapi jika dikorelasikan nilai tersebut mencapai rata-rata.

The study aimed at investigating the level of English vocabulary and writing proficiency and the significant correlation between English vocabulary and writing proficiency. Researcher used Quantitative Descriptive Correlation method, where the population of the study was a Junior High School student graduates in Tarakan. Samples were taken using a random sampling technique. The sample is consist of 18 Junior High School in Tarakan. The schools send their representatives every 3 students as a whole amounted to 54 students, and another selected by lottery to 30 students to know students level of vocabulary and writing proficiency, and the correlation between these two variables. Students are given tests Writing and Vocabulary TOEFL test. The data were analyzed using SPSS 11.0 for windows. The results of the study showed that the mean score of vocabulary level test of Junior High School Graduates in Tarakan was 32.93, It means the vocabulary level of Junior High School Graduates in Tarakan is poor classification. The mean score of writing test of Junior High School Graduates in Tarakan was 38.83 It means the writing level of Junior High School Graduates in Tarakan is poor classification. There is a weaker relationship between the English vocabulary and English writing comprehensions of Junior High School Graduates in Tarakan. It is supported by the correlation coefficient is 0.480 (average) and the critical value (a) of r-table with level of significant is 0.05 (5%), for N=30 – 2 Variable = 28 is 0.361. The result of r-test is higher than r-table (0.480 > 0.361). The data state that the alternative hypothesis (ho) is rejected. It’s mean that correlation coefficient (0.442) included in coefficient interval 0.25-0.5, that’s mean both of variables in the level of students are average correlation. Based on the above results, it was concluded that (Ho) Null Hypothesis is rejected and (Ha) Alternative Hypothesis accepted although the relationship between the two variables students' skills are poor classification but if the correlated value is an average
