Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk meneliti korelasi antara minat dalam mempelajari Bahasa Inggris dan prestasi Bahasa Inggris pada siswa kelas sepuluh di SMAK Frater Don Bosco Tarakan. Ini adalah penelitian kuantitatif dengan desain korelasional. Populasi adalah siswa kelas sepuluh di SMAK Frater Don Bosco Tarakan. Menggunakan teknik sampling acak sederhana, 93 dari 121 siswa kelas X IPA, X IPS-A, X IPS-B dan X IPS-C diambil sebagai sampel penelitian. Data dikumpulkan menggunakan kuesioner, sementara data prestasi Bahasa Inggris dikumpulkan dengan menggunakan dokumen sekolah dari nilai prestasi Bahasa Inggris dari kartu laporan di semester kedua tahun akademik 2018/2019. Data dianalisis secara statistik menggunakan Pearson Product Moment dengan bantuan SPSS versi 24.0. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa ada korelasi yang signifikan antara minat dalam mempelajari Bahasa Inggris dan prestasi Bahasa Inggris pada siswa kelas sepuluh di SMAK Frater Don Bosco Tarakan seperti yang ditunjukkan dengan nilai signifikansi 0.013 < 0.05 dan nilai r yang dihitung lebih besar dari nilai r kritis (0.256 > 0.203).

This study aimed at investigating a correlation between interest in learning English and English achievement of tenth graders at SMAK Frater Don Bosco Tarakan. This was a quantitative research with correlational design. The population was the tenth grade students at SMAK Frater Don Bosco Tarakan. Using simple random sampling technique, 93 of 121 students of classes X IPA, X IPS-A, X IPS-B and X IPS-C were taken as study sample. Data was collected using a questionnaire, while English achievement data was collected using the school documents of English achievement scores from the report cards in the second semester of the 2018/2019 academic year. The data was statistically analyzed using Pearson Product Moment correlation with the help of SPSS version 24.0. The results showed that there was a significant correlation between interest in learning English and English achievement of tenth graders at SMAK Frater Don Bosco Tarakan as indicated by the significance value of 0.013 < 0.05 and the calculated r value was greater than the critical r value (0.256 > 0.203).
