Abstract

Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mencari tahu adanya hubungan signifikan antara kecemasan berbicara dan keterampilan berbicara mahasiswa Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris Angkatan 2019 di Universitas Borneo Tarakan. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kuantitatif. Penentuan sampel dilakukan dengan teknik total sampling. Peneliti mengambil 69 mahasiswa untuk melaksanakan penelitian ini. Data dikumpulkan dengan menggunakan kuisioner, tes berbicara dan wawancara. Kuisioner FLCAS dari Horwitz (1986) dengan 33 pertanyaan digunakan untuk mengukur kecemasan berbicara siswa dan tes berbicara untuk mengukur keterampilan berbicara siswa. Uji korelasi Pearson Product Moment dan Independent Sample T-test digunakan dalam menganalisis data. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan, pertama, tidak ada hubungan antara kecemasan berbicara dan keterampilan berbicara dikarenakan nilai rtest (0.221) lebih rendah dari rtable (0.235) dan nilai sig.2-tailed (0.068) lebih tinggi dari 0.05 yang menandakan tidak terdapat hubungan. Kedua, tidak ada perbedaan signifikan dalam keterampilan berbicara dari siswa yang memiliki level kecemasan berbicara tinggi dan yang rendah, hasil hitung Independent Sample T-test menunjukkan nilai sig. 2-tailed (0.152) lebih tinggi dari 0.05. Ketiga, terdapat korelasi signifikan antara kecemasan berbicara dan grammar pada keterampilan berbicara rtest (0.294) lebih tinggi dari rtable (0.235) dan nilai sig.2-tailed (0.014) lebih rendah dari 0.05. Hasil dari wawancara siswa juga menunjukkan bahwa aspek yang bisa mempengaruhi keterampilan berbicara mereka adalah komponen dari berbicara itu sendiri seperti vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation, dll, kepercayaan diri, persiapan, dan suasana kelas.

The purpose of this study was to find out a significant relationship between speaking anxiety and speaking skills of the 2019 English Education students at the University of Borneo Tarakan. This research used quantitative methods. The sample was determined by using total sampling technique. Researcher took 69 students to carry out this research. Data were collected using questionnaires, speaking test, and interviews. Horwitz’ (1986) FLCAS questionnaire with 33 questions was used to measure students’ speaking anxiety and speaking test to measure students’ speaking skills. The Pearson Product Moment correlation test and Independent Sample T-test were used in analyzing the data. The result of this study showed that, first, there was no relationship between speaking anxiety and speaking skills because the r-test value (0.221) was lower than the r-table (0.235) and the sig.2-tailed value (0.068) was higher than 0.05 which indicated there was no relationship. Second, there was no significant difference in the speaking skills of students who had high and low levels of speaking anxiety. The result of Independent Sample T-test showed that the sig value. 2-tailed (0.152) was higher than 0.05. Third, there was a significant correlation between speaking anxiety and grammar on speaking skill as r-test (0.294) was higher than r-table (0.235) and the sig value. 2-tailed (0.014) was lower than 0.05. The result of the student interviews also showed that the aspect that could affect their speaking skills were components of speaking itself such as vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation, etc, confidence, preparation, and classroom atmosphere.
