Abstract

Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk menentukan tingkat kemampuan pemahaman membaca dan menemukan apakah ada perbedaan yang signifikan antara pemahaman membaca siswa kelas delapan SMP IT Ulul Albab Tarakan Tahun Ajaran 2014/2015 sebelum dan sesudah diajarkan dengan menggunakan short stories. Dalam penelitian ini, peneliti menggunakan penelitian pre-eksperimen sebagai rancangan penelitian. Peneliti menggunakan satu kelompok untuk kelompok pre-test dan post-test. Populasi dari penelitian ini adalah semua siswa kelas delapan SMP IT Ulul Albab Tarakan tahun ajaran 2014/2015 yang berjumlah 28 orang. Penelitian ini menggunakan teknik total sampel untuk menentukan kelompok sampel. Hasil dari penelitian menunjukkan bahwa pemahaman membaca siswa kelas delapan SMP IT Ulul Albab Tarakan tahun ajaran 2014/2015 setelah belajar dengan menggunakan short stories diklasifikasikan cukup, dibandingkan sebelum belajar dengan menggunakan short stories, pemahaman membaca siswa diklasifikasikan rendah. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian diatas, peneliti menyimpulkan bahwa pemahaman membaca siswa berada pada klasifikasi rendah sebelum belajar dengan menggunakan short stories dan pemahaman siswa berada pada klasifikasi cukup setelah belajar dengan menggunakan short stories. Short stories efektif dalam pengajaran pemahaman membaca siswa kelas delapan SMP IT Ulul Albab Tarakan tahun ajaran 2014/2015. Bagi guru dan peneliti lain, short stories dapat diterapkan sebagai media dalam proses belajar mengajar.




The objectives of the research are to determine the levels of reading comprehension and to find out whether there is any significant difference between the reading comprehension of the eighth grade students of SMP IT Ulul Albab Tarakan in academic year 2014/2015 before and after being taught by using short stories. The design of this research was pre-experimental research. The researcher used one group pre-test and post-test. The population of this research was all of the eighth grade students of SMP IT Ulul Albab Tarakan in academic year 2014/2015 with the total number of 28 students. The researcher used total sampling technique to determine the sample group. The result of the research showed that the reading comprehension of the eighth grade students of SMP IT Ulul Albab Tarakan in academic year 2014/2015 after being taught by using short stories had fair level, it’s higher than before which classified as poor level. Based on the research result above, the researcher conclude that the students had poor level of reading comprehension before being taught by using short stories and fair level of reading comprehension after being taught by using short stories. The result also showed that short stories are effective in teaching reading comprehension for eighth grade students of SMP IT Ulul Albab Tarakan in academic year 2014/2015. For the teacher and the other researchers, short stories can be applied as learning material in teaching learning process.
