Abstract
This study aimed to determine the effect of using the Learning Cell Strategy in improving ability to write recount text of eight grade students at SMP Negeri 5 Tarakan. This study used a quasi experimental design. Two groups of samples were taken using purposive sampling technique. The experimental group was taught using the Learning Cell Strategy and the control class was taught using the Small Group Discussion. The research instrument was a written test. The data were taken from the pre-test and post- test results of the experimental and the control classes. An independent sample t-test was used to analyzed the data, with the help of SPSS 24.0. The results indicated that the mean score of the experimental group was 70.40 and that of the control group was 67.20. The t-table value was 2,000 and the t-test value was 4.474, meaning that the t-test value was higher than the t-table value (4.474 > 2,000). Not only the results of the independent sample t-test but the probability value was also lower than the significance level (0.00 < 0.05). In other words, the null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted. It proved that the result of students taught using the Learning Cell Strategy was higher than that using the Small Group Discussion. It was concluded that the use of Learning Cell Strategy in teaching writing of
recount text to eighth grade students at SMP Negeri 5 Tarakan was more effective than the use of Small Group Discussion.
