Abstract

The purpose of this research was to find out the significant differences in students’ reading achievement before and after using Story Mapping Strategy in SMA Hang Tuah Tarakan. The design of this research was Pre-Experimental research. The sample was chosen by using cluster random sampling technique. There was one class that took as the sample in this research. The sample of this research was class X MIA 2 with the total is 36 students. The treatment class was taught by using Story Mapping Strategy. The instrument of this research was reading test with essay type. The data analyzed was from pre-test and post-test of class X MIA 2. In analyzing the data, the researcher used paired sample t-test in application SPSS 24.0. The research result shows that there was different mean score between pretest and posttest. It was proven by the result of the students’ mean score from pretest was 67.22 and 84.31 in posttest. It means that the improvement reading achievement of the students’ with mean score was 17.09. The result of Paired Sample t test shows that -9.944 > 2.030, it means that the students’ reading achievement was improved after giving the treatment. In other words, the null hypothesis (H0) is rejected and alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted. The result of sig (2 tailed) 0.00 < 0.05, it means that the Story Mapping Strategy can give any contribution to the students’ reading achievement on narrative text. Based on the explanation above, it can be concluded that using Story Mapping Strategy was effective in teaching reading achievement for students.
