Penelitian tentang arus pasang surut disekitar perairan Pulau Derawan telah dilakukan pada bulan Januari sampai dengan bulan Februari 2016. Pengamatan dilakukan dengan pengukuran arus dan pasang surut secara paralel di lokasi penelitian. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa tipe arus pasang surut mengikuti tipe pasang surut pembangkitnya, dengan kejadian pasut dua kali pasang tertinggi yaitu 250 cm dan dua kali pasang rendah 35-40 cm atau terjadi dua kali pasang dan dua kali surut dengan ketinggian evelevasi muka air yang hampir sama dalam sehari semalam dan terjadi empat kali perubahan kecepatan arus secara signifikan yaitu terjadi dua kali saat air menuju pasang dengan kecepatan maksimum 0,350 m/detik dan dua kali saat air menuju surut dengan kecepatan minimum 0,016 m/detik. Sementara secara temporal diketahui bahwa pada stick plot terjadi pergeseran arah dan kecepatan arus setiap jam dengan pengamatan pergeseran vektor arus dalam interval 1 jam selama 24 jam pada stasiun permanen. Pada grafik stick plot diketahui arah arus dominan bergerak dari Barat hingga ke Barat Laut dengan kecepatan arus 0,042-0,159 m/detik. Hasil pemetaan arus juga menemukan bahwa pada saat air menuju pasang arah arus cenderung bergerak ke Timur laut dengan kecepatan 0,039 m/detik. Sebaliknya pada saat air menuju surut arus bergerak menjauhi Pulau Derawan dengan pola menyebar dengan kecepatan 0,529 m/detik.

Research on a tidal current around waters off Derawan have been made in January and February 2016. The observation is made to the measurement of the stream and tides in parallel in the research locations. The result showed that type a tidal current follow type tides, In the pasut twice the highest tides 250 cm and twice low tides 35-40 cm or occurring twice up and twice recede by the height of the water evelevasi nearly as a day last night and four cases changes of velocity a current significantly that is occurring twice when water to plug with maximum speed 0,350 m/ seconds and twice as the water to recede by the minimum velocity 0,016 m/seconds. While in temporal known that in stick plot is shifting direction and speed of every hour with the observation vector current shift in the interval 1 watch during 24 hours on permanent station. On a chart stick plot known the current dominant moving from west to the northwestern at the current 0,0420,159 m/seconds. The results of the mapping the tidal current also found that when water to put the current tending to move to the northeast at 0,039 m/seconds. While during when water to recede the current moving away from the island Derawan with a pattern spread at 0,529 m/seconds.
