Abstract

Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk menganalisis kesulitan yang dialami oleh siswa kelas delapan SMP Negeri 4 Tarakan dalam belajar kosakata bahasa inggris. Peneliti menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif. Subjek penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas delapan SMP Negeri 4 Tarakan tahun ajaran 2020/2021. Total populasi siswa sebanyak 343 siswa. Sampel yang dipilih sebanyak 52 siswa dengan menggunakan teknik sampel acak sederhana. Pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan menggunakan dokumen tes, angket, dan wawancara. Dokumen tes digunakan untuk menganalisis jenis kesulitan siswa dalam belajar kosakata. Angket digunakan untuk menganalisis kesulitan siswa yang paling dominan dalam belajar kosakata. Wawancara digunakan untuk mengetahui lebih jauh kesulitan siswa dalam belajar kosakata. Data dianalisis menggunakan analisa deskriptif untuk menganalisis kesulitan siswa dalam bentuk tes kosakata dan persentase kesulitan siswa dalam bentuk angket. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa, pertama, dari hasil tes kosakata ada 10.96% siswa yang kesulitan pada aspek meaning. Sedangkan pada aspek grammar, ada sekitar 43.6% siswa yang kesulitan. Kedua, hasil dari angket menunjukkan bahwa 55.8% siswa yang dapat memahami aspek meaning dan 46.6% siswa yang dapat memahami aspek grammar. Ketiga, hasil dari wawancara dengan guru bahasa inggris menunjukkan bahwa siswa mendapat banyak kesulitan dalam grammar. Dengan demikian, dapat disimpulkan bahwa; pertama, kesulitan siswa dalam belajar kosakata bahasa inggris ada dua jenis yaitu meaning dan grammar. Kedua, kesulitan siswa yang paling dominan adalah grammar.

The purpose of this study was to analyze the difficulties experienced by the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 4 Tarakan in learning English vocabulary. Researchers used a qualitative descriptive method. The subjects of this study were eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 4 Tarakan in the 2020/2021 academic year. The total student population is 343 students. The sample chosen was 52 students using simple random sampling technique. Data collection was carried out using test documents, questionnaires, and interviews. The test document is used to analyze the types of difficulties students have in learning vocabulary. The questionnaire was used to analyze the students' most dominant difficulties in learning vocabulary. Interviews are used to find out more about students' difficulties in learning vocabulary. Data were analyzed using descriptive analysis to analyze student difficulties in the form of vocabulary tests and the percentage of student difficulties in the form of a questionnaire. The results of this study indicate that, first, from the results of the vocabulary test, 10.96% of students had difficulties with meaning aspects. Whereas in the grammar aspect, there were about 43.6% of students who had difficulties. Second, the results of the questionnaire showed that 55.8% of students could understand meaning aspects and 46.6% of students could understand grammar aspects. Third, the results of the interview with the English teacher showed that the students had a lot of difficulties in grammar. Thus, it can be concluded that; First, there are two types of student difficulties in learning English vocabulary, namely meaning and grammar. Second, the most dominant student difficulty is grammar.
