Abstract

Penelitian ini menginvestigasi penerapan Socratic Questioning dalam mengajar Speaking berkaitan dengan teori dari Socratic Questioning. Penelitian ini digunakan untuk menjawab pertanyaan berikut ini : Bagaimana penerapan Socratic Questioning untuk mahasiswa bahasa Inggris semester empat di Univeristas Borneo Tarakan pada tahun pembelajaran 2014/2015 ?. Penelitian ini menggunakan deskriptif kualitatif sebagai metode penelitian. Data penelitian diambil dari hasil dokumen, pengamatan dan tanya jawab. Data yang sudah diperoleh akan dianalisis secara kualitatif. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa dari 6 tipe pertanyaan Socratic Questioning, persentase tipe pertanyaan yang sering muncul atau paling tinggi digunakan dosen adalah pertanyaan tentang sudut pandang atau tipe pertanyaan ke empat. Menurut pernyataan dosen, tipe pertanyaan disesuaikan dengan topik dan penguasaan kosakata mahasiswa pada materi yang akan diberikan, dengan memberikan siswa enam tipe pertanyaan Socratic Questioning, itu tidak hanya akan meningkatkan kemampuan berbicara tetapi juga pola berpikir kritis siswa. Disimpulkan bahwa penerapan Socratic Questioning untuk mahasiswa bahasa Inggris semester empat di Univeristas Borneo Tarakan pada tahun pembelajaran 2014/2015 sesuai dengan teori dari Socratic Questioning dan cukup efektif untuk mengembangkan kemampuan berbicara mahasiswa.

This research investigated how the implementation of Socratic Questioining in teaching speaking in lights of theories of Socratic Questioning. This research was done to answer the question ; how is the implementation of Socratic Questioning in Speaking at the fourth semester students of English Department in academicyear 2014/2015 ?. This research was limited to the lecturer who used Socratic Questioning in teaching speaking.This research used descriptive qualitative as a research method. The data were taken from documentation, observation check list, and interview. The data that were gotten analyzed qualitatively. The result of this research showed that from six types of socratic questioning, there is high precentage on the questions about viewpoints asked by the lecturer’s. According to the lecturer statement that types of questions should be in appropriate the topic and their vocabulary mastery on the material. Six types of Socratic questions, will not only improve student’s speaking but also their critical thinking. In conclusion the implementation of Socratic questioning for the fourth semester students of English department of Borneo University Tarakan was similar with theoriseof Socratic questioning and still effective to improve students speaking ability.
