Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui apakah ada perbedaan yang signifikan dari penggunaan Authentic Materials dan Simplified Materials dalam meningkatkan nilai tulisan siswa dalam teks recount. Penelitian ini menggunakan desain penelitian kuasi eksperimental. Populasi dari penelitian ini adalah seluruh kelas VIII di SMPN 5 Tarakan. Jumlah populasi adalah 8 kelas. Jumlah sampel dalam penelitian ini adalah 61 siswa. Penentuan sampel dengan cara teknik purposive sampling. Ada dua kelas sebagai sampel dalam penelitian ini yaitu kelas eksperimen dan kelas control. Kelas VIII-3 sebagai kelas eksperimen dan kelas VIII-4 sebagai kelas control. Kelas eksperimen berjumlah 33 siswa dan kelas kontrol berjumlah 28 siswa. Tahap-tahap dalam penelitian ini adalah pretest, treatment dan posttest. Pada tahap pretest siswa diminta untuk menulis sebuah teks recount berdasarkan pengalaman pribadi mereka. Setelah pretest, peneliti memberikan treatment. Kelas eksperimen diajarkan menggunakan Authentic Materials dan kelas kontrol diajarkan menggunakan Simplified Materials. Setelah diberikan treatment pada kedua kelas, siswa diminta untuk menulis sebuah teks recount pada tahap pretest dan posttest. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa terdapat perbedaan dari nilai siswa antara kelas eksperimen dan kelas kontrol. Ini dibuktikan melalui hasil nilai rata-rata siswa dari kelas eksperimen dalam pretest adalah 38.30 dan 86.18 pada hasil posttest. Ini berarti pada kelas eksperimen terdapat peningkatan nilai rata-rata sebesar 47.88. hasil nilai siswa dari kelas kontrol pada pretest adalah 44.86 dan hasil posttest adalah 66.00. Ini berarti pada kelas kontrol terdapat peningkatan nilai rata-rata sebesar 21.14. Hal ini menunjukkan bahwa kelas eksperimen memiliki peningkatan nilai rata-rata lebih tinggi dari kelas kontrol. Selisih peningkatan nilai rata-rata antara kelas eksperimen dan kelas kontrol adalah 26.74. Dari hasil analysis data mengindikasikan bahwa ada perbedaan signifikan dari nilai menulis siswa antara kelas eksperimen dan kelas kontrol. Hasil dari independent sample t test pada pretest menunjukkan bahwa -1.679 dan lebih kecil dari angka t table (-2.001), itu berarti kedua kelas tidak mengalami peningkatan apapun sebelum perlakuan diberikan. Sedangkan hasil independent sample t test pada posttest menunjukkan bahwa 8.166 dan lebih besar dari angka t table (2.001). Itu berarti ada perbedaan yang signifikan antara kelas experimental dan control dalam kemampuan menulis teks recount. Berdasarkan keterangan diatas, dapat disimpulkan bahwa menggunakan Authentic Materials lebih efektif dari menggunakan Simplified Materials.

This research objective was to investigate whether there was any significant difference between the students who were taught by using Authentic Materials and those who were taught by using Simplified Materials or not. This research used quasi experimental design. The populations in this research were all of eighth grade students at SMPN 5 Tarakan. The numbers of sample in this research were 61 students. The samples were chosen by using purposive sampling technique. There were two classes as sample. They were experimental class and control class. Class for an experimental class was VIII-3 and VIII-4 as a control class. Experimental class consisted of 33 students and control class consisted of 28 students. The steps in this research were pretest, treatment, and posttest. In the pretest, the students were asked to write a recount text. After giving pretest, the researcher gave treatment. Experimental class was taught by using Authentic Materials and control class was taught by using Simplified Materials. After giving the treatment for both of the class, students were asked to write a recount text in the pretest and posttest. The research result showed that there was different mean score between experimental and control class. It was proven by the result of the students’ mean score from experimental class in the pretest was 38.30 and 86.18 in the posttest. It meant that the improvement of the students’ mean score in experimental class was 47.88. The result of the students’ mean score from control class in the pretest was 44.86 and in the posttest were 66.00. It meant that the improvement of the students’ mean score in control class was 21.14. It showed that the improvement of the students’ mean score in the experimental class was higher than control class. The gains of the students’ improvement mean score was 26.74. From the data analysis, it indicated that there was significant difference from the students’ writing score. The result of independent sample t test in pretest showed that 1.679 and lower than t table (-2.001), it means that both of the classes have no improvement before giving the treatment. Meanwhile, the result of independent sample t test in posttest showed that 8.166 and higher than t table (2.001). It means that there is different ability between experimental and control class in writing ability on recount text after the treatment is given by the researcher. Based on the explanation above, it can be concluded that using Authentic Materials is more effective than using Simplified Materials.
