
The Cognitive Strategies On The Students’ Reading Class At Second Year Students At English Department Of Borneo University Tarakan Academic Year 2017/2018

Abstract
Tujuan dari studi ini adalah untuk menemukan strategi kognitif yang digunakan mahasiswa tahun kedua di Departement Bahasa Inggris Universitas Borneo Tarakan tahun ajaran 2017/2018. Peneliti memberikan kuisoneir, mewawancarai subyek dan mengamati kelas membaca subyek dengan menggunakan catatan lapangan bersama 2 peninjau lainnya. Hasil dari studi ini menunjukkan bahwa ada 9 strategi membaca kognitif yang digunakan oleh mahasiswa tahun kedua di Departement Bahasa Inggris Universitas Borneo Tarakan tahun ajaran 2017/2018. Strategi-strategi tersebut adalah repeating cognitive reading strategy, using resources for receiving and sending message cognitive reading strategy, practicing naturalistically cognitive reading strategy, scanning cognitive reading strategy, taking notes cognitive reading strategy, recombining cognitive reading strategy, reasoning deductively cognitive reading strategy, translating cognitive reading strategy dan terakhir adalah summarizing cognitive reading strategy. Pemilihan dari kesembilan strategi diatas karena semua strategi tersebut membantu subyek dalam proses pembelajaran membaca, memahami teks bacaan dan membantu dalam menjawab pertanyaan saat kelas membaca berlangsung. Secara keseluruhan, jenis-jenis strategi membaca kognitif yang digunakan mahasiswa tahun kedua di Departemen Bahasa Inggris Universitas Borneo Tarakan tahun akademik 2017/2018 dalam kelas membaca mereka sudalah cukup beragam.
The objective of the study was to find out the cognitive strategies, which second year students of English Department Borneo University Tarakan academic year 2017/2018 use as their strategies in learning reading. The subjects of this research were 15 students of English Department Borneo University Tarakan academic year 2017/2018. In the process of collecting the data, researcher gave questionnaire, interviewed the subjects and observed the subjects’ reading class using field note with 2 other observers. The result of this study showed there were 9 cognitive reading strategies that being used by second year students of English Department Borneo University Tarakan academic year 2017/2018 in their reading class. Those were repeating cognitive reading strategy, using resources for receiving and sending message cognitive reading strategy, practicing naturalistically cognitive reading strategy, scanning cognitive reading strategy, taking notes cognitive reading strategy, recombining cognitive reading strategy, reasoning deductively cognitive reading strategy, translating cognitive reading strategy and the last was summarizing cognitive reading strategy. The reason why 9 strategies above being chose because those strategies helped subjects in learning reading process, comprehend reading text and answer question in reading class. Overall, types of cognitive reading strategies those being used by second year students of English Department Borneo University Tarakan academic year 2017/2018 in their reading class were quite varied.
