Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui apakah ada efek Teknik Talking Chips terhadap Keterampilan Berbicara Siswa Kelas Delapan SMPN 11 Tarakan. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah metode pre-experimental dengan design one group pre-test dan post-test. Populasi dari penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas delapan SMPN 11 Tarakan. Sampel dari penelitian ini adalah kelas 8-3 yang terdiri dari 29 siswa. Sample diambil dengan menggunakan Teknik purposive sampling. Data penelitian ini dikumpulkan melalui tes lisan berupa pre-test dan post-test. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa adanya sedikit peningkatan terhadap keterampilan berbicara siswa. Hal ini dapat dilihat dari hasil analisis yang menunjukkan bahwa adanya peningkatan dari hasil nilai rata-rata pre-test dan post-test sebesar 6.49. Uji Wilcoxon Sign Rank Test digunakan karena data dari hasil normality tidak berdistribusi normal. Hasil uji menunjukkan nilai 0.024 lebih kecil dari 0.05 yang berarti bahwa hipotesis alternatif (H1) diterima dan hipotesis nol (H0) ditolak. Selain itu, penelitian ini juga menemukan bahwa adanya peningkatan yang signifikan terhadap aspek pemahaman dalam keterampilan berbicara siswa dengan nilai rata-rata 0.690. Oleh karena itu, dapat disimpulkan bahwa Teknik Talking Chips efektif dalam meningkatkan keterampilan berbicara siswa kelas delapan di SMPN 11 Tarakan. Teknik ini juga terbukti dapat mendorong siswa untuk berpartisipasi aktif, meningkatkan rasa percaya diri, dan termotivasi untuk belajar berbicara bahasa Inggris.

This study aims to determine whether the Talking Chips technique significantly affects the speaking skills of eighth-grade students at SMPN 11 Tarakan. The research employed a pre-experimental method with a one-group pre-test and post-test design. The population consisted of all eighth-grade students, with classes 8-3 (29) selected as the sample through purposive sampling. Data were gathered through oral tests administered before and after the treatment. The findings indicated a moderate improvement in students' speaking performance, as evidenced by an increase of 6.49 points in the mean scores from the pre-test to the post-test. The Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test was applied due to the non-normal distribution of the data. The significance value obtained was 0.024 (p < 0.05), indicating that the alternative hypothesis (H1) was accepted while the null hypothesis (H0) was rejected. Furthermore, the study found a notable improvement in the comprehension aspect of students' speaking skills, with an average increase of 0.690. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that the Talking Chips technique effectively enhances the speaking skills of eighth-grade students at SMPN 11 Tarakan. The technique also fostered active student participation, increased self-confidence, and motivated students to engage more in English-speaking activities.
