Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui perbedaan nilai dalam pemahaman membaca siswa sebelum dan sesudah implementasi metode Preview, Question, Read, Reflect, Recite and Review (PQ4R) dalam pengajaran pemahaman membaca teks descriptive pada siswa kelas delapan di SMP Negeri 1 Sebatik Tengah. Penelitian ini menggunakan desain Penelitian Pre-Experimental. Populasi pada penelitian ini adalah seluruh siswa kelas delapan di SMP Negeri 1 Sebatik Tengah. Cluster Random Sampling dipilih dalam menentukan sampel. Sampel yang terpilih adalah kelas VIII D yang berjumlah 26 siswa. Teknik dalam pengumpulan data yang digunakan oleh peneliti adalah tes pemahaman membaca. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa terdapat perbedaan signifikan nilai siswa dalam pemahaman membaca teks deskriptif setelah menggunakan metode Preview, Question, Read, Reflect, Recite and Review (PQ4R). Hal tersebut dibuktikan dari nilai rata-rata siswa pada pretest dan posttest. Nilai rata-rata siswa pada pretetst adalah 37.23 sedangkan nilai rata-rata siswa pada posttest adalah 73.38. nilai rata-rata siswa pada posttest lebih tinggi dibandingkan dengan nilai rata-rata siswa pada pretest. Peningkatan dari nilai rata-rata pretest ke posttest adalah 36.15. Hasil dari Paired Sample t-test menunjukkan hasil 16.994 dan lebih tinggi dari t-table (2.060). Selain itu, hasil dari sig (2 tailed) adalah .000 lebih rendah dari 0.05. Dari hasil tersebut, bisa dilihat bahwa terdapat peningkatan yang signifikan antara nilai pretest dan posttest siswa setelah menggunakan metode Preview, Question, Read, Reflect, Recite and Review (PQ4R). Berdasarkan penjelasan tersebut, dapat disimpulkan bahwa metode Preview, Question, Read, Reflect, Recite and Review (PQ4R) memiliki pengaruh yang signifikan dalam pengajaran pemahaman membaca pada deskriptif teks.

The objective of this research was to find out the significant difference in students’ score in reading comprehension before and after using Preview, Question, Read, Reflect, Recite and Review (PQ4R) method in teaching reading at the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Sebatik Tengah. The design of this research was Pre-Experimental Research. Population in this research was all of the students in eighth grade students in SMP Negeri 1 Sebatik Tengah. Cluster Random Sampling was chosen to determine the sample. The sample was class VIII D which was consisted of 26 students. The technique of data collection used by the researcher was reading test. The research result showed that there was significant difference of the students’ reading score on descriptive text after using Preview, Question, Read, Reflect, Recite and Review (PQ4R) Method. It was proven by the result of the students’ mean score in the pretest and posttest. The students’ mean score in the pretest was 37.23 meanwhile the students’ mean score in the posttest was 73.38. The students’ mean score in posttest was higher than in the pretest. The improvement of the mean score from pretest to posttest is 36.15. The result of Paired Sample t-test showed that 16.944 and higher than t-table (2.060). Meanwhile, the result of sig (2 tailed) 000 is lower than 0.05. From the result, it can be seen there is significant improvement between students’ pretest and posttest score after using Preview, Question, Read, Reflect, Recite and Review (PQ4R) Method. Based on the explanation, it can be concluded that Preview, Question, Read, Reflect, Recite and Review (PQ4R) Method has significant effect in teaching reading on descriptive text.
