Dalam pembelajaran ini, peneliti fokus terhadap pengajaran kosa kata dengan menggunakan mind maps (peta pikiran) pada siswa/i kelas viii smp mulawarman tarakan tahun pembelajaran 2011/2012. tujuan pembelajran ini adalah untuk mengetahui apakah ada perbedaan yang significant terhadap penguasaan kosa kata siswa yang belajar bahasa inggris menggunakan mind maps dan siswa yang tidak menggunkan main mind maps. penelitian ini menggunakan design quasi experimental group, populasi pembelajaran di ambil dari siswa/i smp mulawaraman tarakan. jumlah total populasi siswa adalah 62 siswa dari 2 kelas, 32 siswa sebagai experimental group dan 32 siswa sebagai control group. peneliti mengambil semua siswa sebagai sampel dalam pembelajaran tersebut. peneliti menggunakan test kosa kata sebagai instrument penelitian untuk mengumpulkan data. yang terdiri dari 50 item pertanyaan dengan empat pilihan jawaban. berdasarka hasil penelitian dari pembelajaran ini, peneliti menyimpulkan bahwa ada perbedaan yang significant terhadap penguasaan kosa kata siswa antara siswa experimetal group dan control group yaitu siswa yang belajar menggunakan mind maps dan siswa yang belajar tidak menggunakan mind maps. di buktikan dengan mean sekor dari experimental group (75.19) yang menunjukan lebih tinggi dari pada control group (67.13) dan hasil dari perhitungan menunjukan bahwa thitung lebih besar dari pada t-table (3.797>1.994).

In this study, the researcher focused on teaching english vocabulary by using mind maps which were conducted for the eighth grade students of smp mulawarman tarakan in academic years 2011/2012. the purpose of the study was to find out whether there was significant difference between the vocabulary mastery of students taught by using mind maps and that of those taught without using mind maps. this study is kind of experimental research. the research design of this study was quasi experimental design. the population of the study was the eighth grade students of smp mulawarman tarakan the total number of the population is 64 students from 2 classes; experimental group consists of 32 students and control group consists of 32 students. the researcher took them all as the sample of the study. the researcher used vocabulary test as the research instrument collected the data of the study which consisted of 50 items of vocabulary test with four option-multiple choice forms. based on the research findings in this study, the researcher concludes that there is significant difference vocabulary mastery between experimental group and control group being taught with and without using mind maps. it is proven by the mean score of experimental group (75.19) which is higher than of control group (67.13), and the result of the t-computed which greater than the t-table (3.797 > 1.994).
