Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menginvestigasi apakah ada korelasi yang signifikan antara grammar a bility dan writing skill dari siswa lulusan sma di tarakan pada tahun ajaran 2010/2011. populasi dari penelitian ini adalah siswa lulusan sma di tarakan pada tahun ajaran 2010/2011 dan saat ini mereka adalah mahasiswa pada universitas di tarakan pada tahun ajaran 2011/2012. penentuan sampel dengan cara tehnik stratified random sampling. jumlah sampel dalam penelitian ini adalah 30 siswa. tahap-tahap dalam penelitian ini adalah dengan memberikan tes kepada siswa sebanyak dua kali. pada tes yang pertama siswa menjawab tes grammar dengan 25 pertanyaan pilihan ganda dan tes yang kedua adalah tes writing dengan membuat surat pribadi. pertanyaan diambil dari tes toefl baron edisi ketiga. tes dilaksanakan di universitas borneo tarakan pada tanggal 16 juni 2012. setelah tes selesai dilaksanakan, peneliti mengoreksi hasil tes. peneliti menggunakan perhitungan statistik dengan bantuan spss.16 for windows. untuk menentukan level dan korelasi antara grammar ability dan writing skill. hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa tidak ada korelasi yang signifikan antara grammar ability dan writing skill. pada r-test=0,118 lebih rendah dari rtable=0,361;(0.1180,05). interpretasi korelasi antara grammar ability dan writing skill dalam penelitian ini adalah sangat lemah, bahwa pada test hipotesis h 0 diterima dan h 1 ditolak. maka dapat disimpulkan bahwa tidak ada korelasi yang signifikan antara grammar ability dan writing skill pada siswa lulusan sma tarakan tahun ajaran 2010/2011.

This research is aimed at investigating whether there is any correlation between levels of english grammar ability and writing skill of senior high school (sma) graduates in tarakan in academic year 2010/2011. the population of this research was the students of senior high school graduates in tarakan in academic year 2010/2011, and now, they are students in university of tarakan in academic 2011/2012. the sample was taken by using stratified random sampling technique. the sample in this research consisted of 30 students. the stages in this research was a set of test was given twice. in the first test the students had answered the grammar ability test with 25 multiple choice questions and the second test was writing test, in this test the students had composed a social letter. these questions were taken from barons" test toefl third edition. the test was done in borneo university on june 16 th 2012. after the tests were done, the researcher had corrected from those test and the researcher had calculated the data with the help of spss.16 for windows to determine whether there is any correlation between grammar ability and writing skill. this research result shows that there is no any significance correlation between grammar ability and writing skill. it is proven that r-test = 0.118 is lower than r-table = 0.361; (0.118< 0.361). in the level of significance of this research can be reported that significant value = 0.536 is higher than significant level = 0.05; (0.536>0.05).the interpretation of the strength of correlation coefficient between levels of english grammar ability and writing skill was in very low level, in hypothesis testing. that means h 0 is accepted and h 1 is rejected. the researcher concludes that there is no significance correlation between grammar ability and writing skill of senior high school graduates in tarakan in academic year 2010/2011.
