Penelitian ini adalah penelitian experimen yang menerapkan desain satu grup pretes-posttest. dalam penelitian ini peneliti bermaksud untuk menemukan apakah terdapat perbedaan kemampuan berbicara bahasa inggris siswa sebelum dan sesudah di lakukan nya perlakuan debat sebagai metode pembelajaran. subjek atau sample dalam penelitian ini di ambil dari siswa kelas sebelas smkn 2 tarakan jurusan teknik komputer jaringan dengan menggunakan purposive sampling. jumlah perespon sebanyak 24 siswa. instrumen dalam penelitian ini meliputi tes lisan (wawancara) dan catatan lapangan. untuk statistiknya peneliti menguanakan spss 21.00 dan peneliti jugah menggunakan data kualitatif untuk memperkuat data kuantitatif berdasarkan hasil pengimputan data statistik menggunakan spss 21.00, hasilnya menunjukkan bahwa terdapat perbedaan antara pencapaian pretes dan posttes. hasil t-test sebesar 9.940, jika t-test dibandingkan dengan t-table dengan tingkat kebebasan sebesar 23, sejalan dengan pernyataan hyphotesis testing the ttest 9.940 lebih tinggi dari pada t-table sebesar 2.069 diterima dan ho ditolak, oleh karena itu berdasarkan pengambilan keputusan ha diterima dan ho di tolak yang berarti bahwa penggunaan debat pada siswa dapat mengembangkan kemampuan berbicara bahasa inggris siswa.

This research was an experimental research method that applied one-group pretest-posttest design. in this research the researcher intended to find out whether there is any difference of students’ english speaking skill before and after conducting debate as teaching method. the subject of this study was taken from the students of computer engineering and network program in smkn 2 tarakan by using purposive sampling technique. the number of the respondent were 24 students. in this research the instrument comprised oral speaking test (interview) and field note. to analyze the statistic, the researcher used spss 21.00 and the researcher also used qualitative data to encourage the quantitative data. based on the result of the statistical computation using spss 21.00, the result shows that there was difference between pretest and posttest achievement. the result t-test was 9.940, if the t-test is compared to t-table with the degree of freedom 23 as stated hypothesis testing; the t-test 9.940 was higher than the t-table 2.069. therefore, based on the hypothesis testing, ha is accepted and the ho was rejected, the theory was verified. it means conducting debate can improve students’ english speaking skill.
