Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui keefektifan teknik clustering dalam mengajar menulis pada siswa kelas delapan di smpn 4 tarakan. desain dari penelitian ini adalah penelitian eksperimen. populasi dari penelitian adalah siswa kelas delapan smpn 4 tarakan pada tahun akademik 2014/2015. total populasi adalah 377 siswa. teknik pengambilan sampel adalah purposive sampling. total sampel ada 74 siswa yang dibagi menjadi dua kelompok, yaitu kelompok eksperimen dan kelompok kontrol. setiap kelompok terdiri atas 37 siswa. instrumen dalam penelitian adalah tes menulis. hasil dari penelitian menunjukkan bahwa nilai siswa di kelompok eksperimen lebih tinggi dari nilai siswa di kelompok kontrol. nilai rata-rata dari kelompok eksperimen adalah 80.22 dan nilai rata-rata dari kelompok kontrol adalah 70.32. berdasarkan hasil penghitungan uji-t, uji-t > t-tabel (5.235 > 1.993) dan signifikan (nilai sig. 2 tailed adalah .000 < .05). ini menunjukkan bahwa ada perbedaan yang signifikan pada nilai tes akhir antara kelompok eksperimen dan kelompok kontrol. karenanya, ho ditolak. dari data di atas, dapat disimpulkan bahwa penggunaan teknik clustering efektif dalam mengajar teks deskriptif pada siswa kelas delapan di smpn 4 tarakan.

The objective of the research was to know the significant effect of clustering technique in teaching writing descriptive text at the eighth grade students of smpn 4 tarakan. the design of the research was experimental research. the population of this research was the eighth grade students of smpn 4 tarakan in the academic year 2014/2015. the total population were 377 students. the total sample were 74 students which were divided into two group, namely experimental and control group. each group consisted of 37 students. instrument of the research was writing test. the result of the research showed that the students score in experimental group was higher than the students score in control group. the mean score of experimental group was 80.22 and the mean score of control group was 70.32. the computation result of t-test showed that t-test > t-table (5.235 > 1.993) and the significant (the sig. 2 tailed value is .000 < .05). it meant that there was significant difference in post test score between experimental group and control group. thus, ho was rejected. from the data above, it can be concluded that the use of clustering technique was effective in teaching descriptive text at the eighth grade students of smpn 4 tarakan.
