Menulis merupakan salah satu keterampilan bahasa inggris yang harus diajarkan disamping keterampilan yang lain. berdasarkan kurrikulum sekolah menengah pertama yang direkomendasikan pemerintah, ada beberapa teks yang harus dikuasai oleh murid smp. salah satu dari teks tersebut adalah teks deskriptif. teks deskriptif adalah teks yang menggambarkan seseorang, tempat, dan benda secara rinci. dalam mempelajari teks deskriptif, siswa mengalami kesulitan dalam mempelajarinya. siswa tidak tahu apa yang harus ditulis meskipun mereka sudah mengetahui topik yang diberikan oleh guru. oleh karena itu, untuk mengatasi masalah tersebut peneliti ingin mengaplikasikan teknik guided questions. penelitian ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan kemampuan siswa dalam menulis teks deskriptif melalui teknik guided questions pada siswa kelas viii-5 di smp negeri 10 tarakan tahun ajaran 2015/2016. subjek pada penelitian ini yaitu siswa kelas viii-5 yang terdiri dari 27 siswa sebagai sampelnya. desain penelitian ini menggunakan penelitian tindakan kelas (ptk). penelitian ini dilaksanakan dari bulan april 2016 sampai bulan mei 2016. penelitian ini dilakukan dalam dua siklus yang terdiri dari beberapa tahap yaitu, perencanaan, pelaksanaan, pengamatan dan refleksi. penelitian ini menggunakan tiga instrumen yaitu, lembar pengamatan, tes dan catatan lapangan. berdasarkan kriteria kesuksesan hasil penlitian ini menunjukkan bahwa adanya teknik guided questions dapat meningkatkan kemampuan siswa dalam menulis. dari hasil tes menulis pada siklus i hanya 11 siswa (41%) yang dapat mencapai kriteria ketuntasan minimal dan 16 siswa (59%) tidak mencapai kkm. nilai tertinggi adalah 88, nilai terendah 48 dan nilai rata-rata 70. pada siklus ii meningkat menjadi 22 siswa (81%) yang dapat mencapai kriteria ketuntasan minimal dan hanya 5 siswa (19%) yang tidak mencapai kkm. nilai tertinggi 90, nilai terendah 69 dan nilai rata-rata 78. berdasarkan hasil penelitian dapat disimpulan bahwa teknik guided questions dapat meningkatkan kemampuan siswa dalam menulis teks deskriptif pada siswa kelas viii-5 di smp negeri 10 tarakan tahun ajaran 2015/2016.

Writing is one of the language skills that should be taught besides the other skills. based on the curriculum of junior high school recommended by the goverment, there are some text which have to be mastered by the junior high school students. one of the text is descriptive text. descriptive text is the text to describe person, place, and thing in detail. in learning descriptive text, students may have difficulties in learning it. students may be confused what to write although they know the topic which has been given by the teacher. therefore to overcome the problem the researcher wants to apply guided questions technique. the objective of this research was to improve students’ skill on writing descriptive text through guided questions technique at class viii-5 of smpn 10 tarakan in academic year 2015/2016. the subject of this research was the students of class viii-5 that consisted of 27 students as the sample. the design of this research used classroom action research (car). the research was done from april 2016 until may 2016. the research was conducted in two cycles that consist of some steps, planning, implementing, observing and reflecting. the research used three instruments they were, observation sheet, test and field note. based on the criteria of success this result showed that guided questions technique can improve the students skill in writing. from the writing test result in cycle i there were only 11 students (41%) who could pass the minimum passing grade and 16 students (59%) failed. the highest score was 88, the lowest score was 48 and the avearge score was 70. in cycle ii, it increased to 22 students (81%) who could pass the minimum passing grade and only 5 students (19%) failed. the highest score was 90, the lowest score was 69 and the average score was 78. based on the research result it can be concluded that guided questions technique can improve the students’ writing skill on descriptive text at class viii-5 of smpn 10 tarakan in academic year 2015/2016.
