Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui apakah terdapat perbedaan signifikan dalam pemahaman membaca siswa sebelum dan sesudah menggunakan tehnik herringbone dalam pengajaran recount text di smp negeri 3 tanjung palas. penelitian ini menggunakan desain penelitian pre-experimental. populasi pada penelitian ini adalah seluruh siswa dari kelas viii di smp negeri 3 tanjung palas. sampel dalam penelitian ini adalah kelas viii c. jumlah sampel dalam penelitian ini adalah 22 siswa. penentuan sampel dilakukan dengan cara teknik purposive sampling. kelas viii c adalah kelas yang diberi perlakuan. kelas yang diberi perlakuan berjumlah 22 siswa. tahap-tahap dalam penelitian ini adalah pretest, treatment, dan posttest. pada tahap pretest siswa diminta untuk mengerjakan reading test. setelah pretest, peneliti memberikan treatment. kelas yang diberi perlakuan diajarkan meggunakan tehnik herringbone. setelah diberikan treatment, siswa diminta untuk mengerjakan soal reading test pada tahap posttest. dalam menganalisis data, peneliti menggunakan paired sample t-test dalam aplikasi 22.0. hasil dari penelitian menunjukkan bahwa terdapat perbedaan nilai rata-rata diantara pretest dan posttest. ini dibuktikan melalui hasil nilai rata-rata siswa dari pretest adalah 49.95 dan 67.14 pada hasil posttest. ini menunjukkan bahwa terdapat peningkatan nilai rata-rata sebesar 17.182. hasil dari paired sample t-test (8.037) lebih besar dari t-table (2.080). itu membuktikan bahwa emahaman membaca siswa dalam teks recount text mengalami peningkatan setelah diberikan perlakuan. hasil dari perbandingan sig (2 tailed) 0.000 lebih kecil dari 0.05, itu berarti bahwa tehnik herringbone dapat memberikan kontribusi pada pemahaman membaca siswa. berdasarkan penjelasan di atas, dapat disimpulkan bahwa penggunaan tehnik herringbone efektif dalam meningkatkan pemahaman membaca siswa dalam recount text pada kelas viii di smp negeri 3 tanjung palas.

This research objective was to find out whether there was any significant difference in students’ reading comprehension before and after being taught using herringbone technique in learning recount text at eighth grade of smp negeri 3 tanjung palas. the design of this research was pre-experimental research. the population in this research was all of the eighth grade students at smp negeri 3 tanjung palas. the sample in this research was 22 students. the sample was chosen by using purposive sampling technique. class for treatment was viii c. it consisted of 22 students. the steps in this research were pretest, treatment, and posttest. in the pretest, the students were asked to answer the reading test. after giving the pretest, the researcher gave treatment. the treatment class was taught by using herringbone technique. after giving the treatment, students were asked to answer the reading test in posttest. in analyzing the data, the researcher was used paired sample t-test in spss 22.0. the result of this research showed that there was different mean score between pretest and posttest. it was proven by the result of the students’ mean score from pretest was 49.95 and 67.14 in the posttest. it indicates that the improvement of the students’ mean score was 17.182. the result of paired sample t-test (8.037) was higher than t-table (2.080). it proves that the students’ reading comprehension in recount text improved after giving the treatment. the result of sig (2 tailed) 0.000 is lower than 0.05, it means that the herringbone technique can give any contribution to the students’ reading comprehension. based on the explanation above, it can be concluded that using herringbone technique is effective to improve the students’ reading comprehension in recount text at the eighth grade of smp negeri 3 tanjung palas.
