Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui pengaruh dari penggunaan stad dalam pengajaran pemahaman membaca pada siswa kelas sembilan di smp negeri 4 tarakan. penelitian ini menggunakan desain pre-eksperimental. populasi dari penelitian ini adalah seluruh siswa kelas sembilan di smp negeri 4 tarakan. jumlah populasi dari penelitian ini adalah 304 siswa. sampel dari penelitian ini adalah kelas ix 1 yang terdiri dari 30 siswa. sampel diambil dengan menggunakan teknik purposive sampling. tahap-tahap dalam penelitian ini adalah pre-test, treatment dan post-test. pada tahap pre-test, siswa diminta untuk membaca teks narrative berdasarkan topic yang diberikan. setelah pre-test, peneliti memberikan treatment. kelas eksperimen diajar dengan menggunakan stad. setelah diberikan treatment, siswa diminta untuk mengerjakan soal teks narrative pada tahap post-test. hasil dari penelitian menunjukan bahwa terdapat perbedaan nilai rata-rata antara pre-test dan post-test. ini dibuktikan melalui hasil nilai rata-rata siswa dalam pre-test adalah 43.17 dan hasil post-test adalah 59.23. ini menunjukan adanya peningkatan nilai rata-rata siswa sebesar 16.06. dari hasil perhitungan menggunakan paired samples t-test dapat diketahui bahwa nilai sig.2 tailed lebih kecil dibandingkan level of significant (0.000 < 0.05). itu mengindikasikan bahwa hipotesis alternatif (ha) diterima dan hipotesis nol (h0) ditolak. dengan demikian terdapat pengaruh signifikan dari penggunaan stad dalam pengajaran pemahaman membaca. paired samples t-test telah dianalisis menggunakan spss version 22.0. secara keseluruhan, dapat disimpulkan bahwa stad efektif dalam pengajaran pemahaman membaca pada siswa kelas sembilan di smp negeri 4 tarakan.

The objective of this research is to find out the significant effect of using stad in teaching reading comprehension to the ninth graders of smp negeri 4 tarakan. this research uses pre experimental design. the population of this research are all of the ninth graders at smp negeri 4 tarakan. the total of population are 304 students. the sample of this research is ix 1 class that consisted of 30 students. the sample was chosen by using purposive sampling technique. the steps in this research are pre-test, treatment and post-test. in the pre-test, the students were asked to read a narrative text based on the topics given. after giving pre-test, the researcher gave the treatment. this class was taught by using stad. after giving the treatment, students were asked to red a narrative text in the post-test. the result of this research shows that there is different mean score between pre-test and post-test. it is proven by the result of the students’ mean score in pre-test was 43.17 and in post-test was 59.23. it shows that the improvement of the students’ mean score in experimental class is 16.06. from the result of computation using paired samples t-test shows that sig. (2 tailed) is lower than level of significant (0.000 < 0.05). it indicates that the alternative hypothesis (ha) is accepted and the null hypothesis (h0) is rejected. thus, there is a significant effect of using stad in teaching reading comprehension. the paired samples t-test was analyzed by using spss version 22.0. overall, it can be concluded that stad is effective in teaching reading comprehension to the ninth graders of smp negeri 4 tarakan.
