Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui pengaruh penggunaan whatsapp dialogue journal dalam menulis paragraf essai bagi mahasiswa tahun kedua jurusan pendidikan bahasa inggris universitas borneo tarakan. metode penelitian ini adalah quasi experimental. sampel diambil dengan menggunakan purposive sampling. ada dua kelas yang diambil sebagai sampel dalam penelitian ini. kelas eksperimen dilatih menulis menggunakan whatsapp dialogue journal sedangkan kelas kontrol dilatih oleh dosennya dengan menggunakan writing journal. instrumen penelitian ini adalah tes tertulis. data yang dianalisis adalah data nilai hasil pretest dan posttest dari kelas eksperimen dan kelas kontrol. dalam menganalisis data, peneliti menggunakan independent sample t-test dengan spss 23. hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa nilai rata-rata kelas eksperimen adalah 65.33 dan nilai rata-rata kelas control adalah 57.22. nilai t-table dan t-test. nilai ttable adalah 1.998 dan nilai t-test adalah 2.966 dalam jumlah df 64. hal ini menunjukkan bahwa t-test lebih tinggi dari pada nilai t-table (2.966 > 1.998). dengan kata lain, hipotesis nol (h0) diterima dan hipotesis alternative (ha) ditolak. hasil analisis data membuktikan bahwa hasil pengajaran menggunakan whatsapp dialogue journal lebih tinggi dibandingkan dengan menggunakan writing journal. berdasarkan hasil diatas, dapat disimpulkan bahwa whatsapp dialogue journal memberikan dampak dalam meningkatkan kemampuan mahasiswa tahun kedua dalam menulis paragraf essai.

The objective of this research is to know the influence of whatsapp dialogue journal in improving the second year students’ writing skill on paragraph of essay at english department of borneo tarakan university. the method of this research was quasi experimental. the samples were taken by using purposive sampling technique. there were two classes as the samples of this research. the experimental class was practiced by whatsapp dialogue journal and control class was practiced by writing journal. the instrument of this research was writing test. the analyzed data was from pretest and posttest of the experimental class and control class. in analyzing the data, the researcher used pre-requite test and hypothesis test, then independent sample t-test with spss 23. the result of the research showed that the mean score of experimental class was 65.33 and the mean score of control class was 57.22. the value of t-table and ttest.t-table value was 1.998 and t-test was 2.966 in degree of freedom (df) 64. it indicates that the value of t-test was higher than t-table (2.966 > 1.672). in other words, the null hypothesis (h0) is accepted and the alternative hypothesis (ha) is rejected. the result of the analysis data result proves that practiced by whatsapp dialogue journal was higher than practiced by writing journal. based on the result above, it can be concluded that whatsapp dialogue journal gives an influence in improving the second year students’ writing skill at english department of borneo tarakan university.
