keterampilan berbicara merupakan aspek penting dalam komunikasi efektif, baik di lingkungan akademik maupun kehidupan sehari-hari. namun, banyak mahasiswa, khususnya dalam konteks pembelajar bahasa inggris sebagai bahasa asing (efl), masih mengalami kesulitan dalam menguasai keterampilan ini karena berbagai hambatan internal dan eksternal. penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengidentifikasi faktor-faktor penghambat keterampilan berbicara bahasa inggris pada mahasiswa semester dua program studi pendidikan bahasa inggris di universitas borneo tarakan. penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan studi kasus kualitatif, dengan pengumpulan data melalui wawancara mendalam terhadap 19 mahasiswa, didukung oleh kuesioner dan observasi kelas. data dianalisis secara tematik dan divalidasi melalui triangulasi instrumen. hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa faktor psikologis seperti kecemasan, rasa takut membuat kesalahan, kurang percaya diri, dan rasa malu merupakan hambatan paling dominan. diikuti oleh tantangan linguistik, seperti keterbatasan kosakata, kesalahan tata bahasa, dan pelafalan. faktor eksternal seperti lingkungan yang kurang mendukung dan minimnya kesempatan berbicara juga berkontribusi. sementara itu, penggunaan teknologi dan media justru menunjukkan pengaruh positif terhadap peningkatan motivasi dan partisipasi mahasiswa dalam berbicara. temuan ini menegaskan bahwa faktor internal perlu diatasi terlebih dahulu untuk meningkatkan keterampilan berbicara secara efektif. kata kunci: keterampilan berbicara, faktor penghambat, hambatan psikologis, tantangan linguistik, penelitian kualitatif

Speaking skills are a crucial aspect of effective communication, both in academic settings and daily life. however, many students particularly those learning english as a foreign language (efl) continue to face challenges in mastering this skill due to various internal and external barriers. this study aims to identify the factors that inhibit the english-speaking skills of second-semester students in the english education study program at universitas borneo tarakan. a qualitative case study approach was employed, with data collected through in-depth interviews with 19 students, supported by questionnaires and classroom observations. the data were analyzed thematically and validated through instrument triangulation. the findings reveal that psychological factors such as anxiety, fear of making mistakes, lack of self-confidence, and shyness-are the most dominant barriers. furthermore, linguistic challenges, such as limited vocabulary, grammatical errors, and pronunciation, also contributed. external factors such as an unsupportive environment and limited speaking opportunities also contribute to students' difficulties. conversely, the use of technology and media was found to have a positive impact on increasing students' motivation and participation in speaking activities. the findings of this study confirm that internal factors need to be addressed first to improve speaking skills. keywords: speaking skill, inhibiting factors, psychological barriers, linguistic challenges, qualitative research
